1st      The Indians defeat the Devil Rays, 6-3. TB becomes the first team in ML history to lose 100 games and still have a winning record at home. Cleveland OF Grady Sizemore joins Chuck Klein as the only players in history with 50 doubles, 10 triples, 20 homers, and 20 steals in the same season.

The Royals down the Tigers, 10-8. The loss drops Detroit behind Minnesota for the AL Central crown, giving the Tigers the wild card sport for the playoffs.

Red Sox rookie P Devern Hansack hurls 5 hitless innings for a rain-shortened 9-0 Boston win over the Orioles. In his 2ndML outing, Hansack becomes the 9thAL pitcher to allow no hits in a complete game of fewer than 9 innings. It is his 1stML win.

The Twins defeat the White Sox, 5-1, to clinch the AL Central championship. Joe Mauer becomes the first catcher to win an AL batting title, getting 2 hits in his final contest to finish at .347.

The Cardinals lose to the Brewers, 5-3, but still clinch their 3rdstraight NL Central division championship.

The Marlins down the Phillies, 3-2, in 11 innings but lose Pitcher Dontrelle Willis in the 2ndinning. Willis dives for an infield fly ball and injured his arm.  Dan Uggla homers for the Fish, scoring his 105thrun of the year. Along with Hanley Ramirez, they are the first pair of rookie teammates since Dale Alexander and Roy Johnson of the 1929 Tigers to each score 100 runs in the same season.

The Dodgers edge the Giants, 4-3, to finish as the NL wild-card representative in the playoffs.

The Padres best the Diamondbacks, 7-6, to clinch the NL West Division title.

The Chicago Cubs announce that president Andy MacPhail is resigning effective immediately. MacPhail had been president for 12 years. John McDonough, Cubs senior vice president of marketing and broadcasting, will serve as interim president.

2ndThe Giants cut ties with manager Felipe Alou after 4 years at the helm.

The Cubs drop the other show as they decline to renew the contract of manager Dusty Baker after 4 years.

3rdThe Marlins fire Joe Girardi as their manager. Braves 3rd-base coach Fredi Gonzalez is hired to replace him.

The Athletics edge the Twins, 3-2, in the opener of their AL Division Series on the strength of a pair of HRs by Frank Thomas. Barry Zito gets the win for Oakland.

It is 87 degrees in New York, the hottest October 3 on record as the Yankees roast the visiting Tigers, 8-4, in Game 1 of their AL Division Series. Derek Jeter goes 5-for-5 for New York, including a 2B and HR. Jason Giambi also homers for the Bronx Bombers while Chien-Ming Wang gets credit for the victory. Curtis Granderson and Craig Monroe homer for Detroit.

The Cardinals win the opener of their NL Division Series against the Padres by a score of 5-1. Cris Carpenter gets the win for St. Louis while Albert Pujols hits a HR.

The Mets open their NL Division Series against the Dodgers with a 6-5 win. Carlos Delgado gets 4 hits, including a HR for New York, while Cliff Floyd adds a homer and David Wright collects 3 RBIs with a pair of doubles. Guillermo Mota gets the win in relief.

The Athletics take a two games to one lead over the Twins in their series with a 5-2 victory. Mark Kotsay hits an inside-the-park HR for the victors.

5thThe Mets down the Dodgers, 4-1, to take a 2-0 lead in the Division Series. Jose Reyes drives in a pair of runs for New York, while Tom Glavine hurls 6 shutout innings and Billy Wagner records his 2ndsave in 2 days.

The Cardinals shut out the Padres, 2-0, as Jeff Weaver and 4 relief pitchers combine to throw a 4-hitter. Albert Pujols gets 3 hits and drives in a run for St. Louis.

The Tigers even their Division Series with the Yankees, coming from behind to win by a score of 4-3 with Curtis Granderson’s triple being the deciding blow. Jamie Walker gets the win in relief. Johnny Damon and Carlos Guillen hit HRs for New York and Detroit respectively.

6thThe A’s down the Twins, 8-3, to sweep their Division series and move on to the ALCS. Milton Bradley and Eric Chavez homer for Oakland and Dan Haren gets the win. Justin Morneau and Torii Hunter homer in a losing cause for Minnesota.

The Mets defeat the Dodgers, 9-5, to sweep their Division series and move into the NLCS. Jeff Kent gets 4 hits for LA, including a HR, but it’s not enough to beat New York’s 14-hit attack led by Shawn Green. Pedro Feliciano gets the win in relief.

The Tigers down the Yankees, 8-3, to win their Division series, 3 games to 1. Jeremy Bonderman goes 8+ innings for the win. He’s aided by HRs by Magglio Ordonez and Craig Monroe.

The Padres keep their hopes alive in their Division series with the Cardinals with a 3-1 win. Chris Young gets the win for SD, with Russell Branyan’s 2-run 2B being the key blow.

8thThe Cardinals defeat the Padres, 6-2, to take their NLDS, 3 games to 1. Cris Carpenter gets the win for St. Louis, while Ronnie Belliard drives in a pair of runs.

10thThe Tigers down the Athletics, 5-1, to take the opening game of the ALCS. Nate Robertson gets the victory, and Ivan Rodriguez and Brandon Inge hit HRs for Detroit.

11thYankees pitcher Cory Lidle is killed when his single-engine plane slams into a 50-story skyscraper on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Killed with him is his pilot instructor.

12thThe Mets shut out the Cardinals, 2-0, in the 1stgame of the NLCS. Carlos Beltran’s 2-run homer if the big blow for New York. Tom Glavine and a pair or relief pitchers hold St. Louis to 4 hits.

13thThe Tigers take a commanding 3-games-to-0 lead in the ALCS with a 3-0 win over the Athletics. Kenny Rogers and 2 relievers hold Oakland to just 2 hits. Craig Monroe homers for Detroit. Oakland’s Mark Kiger makes history by becoming the first modern day player to make his big league debut in the postseason, entering the game as a defensive replacement at 2B.

The Cardinals even their NLCS with the Mets with a 9-6 victory. Josh Kinney gets the win in relief as St. Louis scores 3 times in the 9thoff Billy Wagner. Carlos Delgado hits a pair of HRs for New York, while So Taguchi and Jim Edmonds connect for the Cardinals.
