1st      The Phillies defeat the Brewers, 3-1, to take the opener of their NL Division Series. Cole Hamels goes 8 innings for the win. Chase Utley drives in a pair of runs for Philadelphia.

The Cubs take a 2-0 lead in the opener of their NLDS game, but James Loney hits a 5th inning grand slam off Ryan Dempster and the Dodgers beat the Cubs, 7-2. Derek Lowe gets the win for LA while Manny Ramirez and Russell Martin also hit homers. Mark DeRosa connects for Chicago. Managers Joe Torre and Lou Piniella have combined to manage 7,267 regular season games, the most for 2 managers opposing each other in a postseason contest.

The Red Sox down the Angels, 4-1, in the opener of their AL Division Series. Jon Lester gets the win for Boston, while Jason Bay hits a HR.

2ndThe Phillies jump on CC Sabathia and go on to a 5-2 victory over the Brewers to go up 2-0 in their Division Series. Brett Myers gets the win and Shane Victorino hits a grand slam for Philadelphia.

The Dodgers slam the Cubs, 10-3, to take a 2-0 lead in their Division Series. Chad Billingsley gets the win and Manny Ramirez homers for the victors. Each member of the Cubs’ infield commits an error, the 2nd time in ML history that each member of an infield has made a miscue in a postseason game. The Tigers did so in Game 1 of the 1934 WS.

The Rays edge the White Sox, 6-4, in the opener of their AL Division Series. James Shields gets the victory and Evan Longoria hits 2 homers for Tampa. Longoria becomes the 2nd player in history to homer in his 1st two postseason at bats. Gary Gaetti performed the feat for the Minnesota Twins in 1987. Paul Konerko and Dewayne Wise homer for Chicago.

3rdThe Rays beat the White Sox, 6-2, to go up 2-0 in their Division Series. Scot Kazmir gets the win and rookie Akinori Iwamura hits a HR for Tampa.

Boston’s JD Drew hits a 2-run homer in the 9th inning to give the Red Sox a 7-5 win over the Angels, and a 2-0 lead in their AL Division Series.

4thThe Dodgers defeat the visiting Cubs, 3-1, behind Hiroki Kuroda to sweep their Division Series with Chicago. James Loney’s 2-run double in the 1st inning is the deciding hit. A frustrated Ted Lilly, the Cubs top pitcher who was not used against LA, takes a bat to the pipes in the dugout causing a flood.

The Brewers beat the Phillies, 4-1, to stay alive in their Division Series. Dave Bush gets the win for Milwaukee. Jamie Moyer, at age 45, becomes the oldest P ever to lose a postseason game.

5thThe Phillies close out their Division Series with the Brewers with a 6-2 win behind Joe Blanton. Pat Burrell hits a pair of homers for Philadelphia, while Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth also connect. Prince Fielder homers for Milwaukee.

The White Sox defeat the Rays, 5-3, to stay alive in their ALDS. John Danks gets the win for Chicago while BJ Upton homers for Tampa Bay.

The Angels edge the Red Sox, 5-4, in 12 innings to remain alive in their ALDS. Mike Napoli hits a pair of homers for LA, then singles and scores the winning run in the 12th. Jered Weaver gets the win for the Angels in the first relief appearance of his career.

6thThe Rays beat the White Sox, 6-2, to take their ALDS, 3-games-to-1. BJ Upton hits a pair of homers for TB and Andy Sonnanstine gets the win. Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko homer in a losing cause for Chicago.

Jed Lowrie’s 2-out single in the bottom of the 9th scores Jason Bay with the winning run as the Red Sox defeat the Angels, 3-2, to win their ALDS. Manny Delcarmen gets the win in relief for Boston.

9thThe Phillies edge the Dodgers, 3-2, in the opener of the NLCS. Pat Burrell and Chase Utley homer for Philadelphia and Cole Hamels gets the win.

10thBrett Myers hurls and bats the Phillies to an 8-5 win over the Dodgers to take a 2-games-to-0 lead in the NLCS. Myers has 3 hits and 3 RBIs to go along with the victory. He becomes the first player in ML history to get 3 hits in a postseason game after batting below .100 in the regular season. Shane Victorino drives in 4 runs for Philadelphia and Manny Ramirez homers for LA.

The Red Sox defeat the Rays, 2-0, behind Daisuke Matsuzaka in the opener of the ALCS. Matsuzaka does not allow a hit until the 7th inning, and strikes out 9 TB batters.

11thThe Rays edge the Red Sox, 9-8, in 11 innings to even the ALCS at 1 game apiece. BJ Upton’s sacrifice fly drives home the winning run and rookie David Price gets the win. Dustin Pedroia hits a pair of homers for Boston, with Kevin Youkilis and Jason Bay also connecting. Each of them has three hits, as does Coco Crisp, while the rest of the order goes hitless. Cliff Floyd, BJ Upton, and Evan Longoria all homer for TB. The win is the 1st ML decision for Price, who becomes the 3rd P in ML history whose first decision comes in a postseason game. Francisco Rodriguez and Josh Kinney are the others.

12thThe Dodgers score 5 runs in the 1st inning and go on to defeat the Phillies, 7-2 in the NLCS. Hiroki Kuroda gets the win for LA, which trails in the Series, 2-games-to-1. Rafael Furcal homers for the Dodgers.

13thThe Rays rout the Red Sox, 9-1, to take a 2-1 lead in the ALCS. Matt Garza gets the win for TB, which gets homers from Carlos Pena, Rocco Baldelli, BJ Upton, and Evan Longoria.

The Phils move ahead of the Dodgers in the NLCS, 3-games-to-1, with a 7-5 win. Ryan Madson gets the win in relief. Matt Stairs and Shane Victorino each hit 2-run homers in the 8th inning to give Philadelphia its winning margin. Casey Blake homers for LA.

14thThe Rays take a 3-games-to-1 lead over the Red Sox with a 13-4 win in Game 4 of the ALCS. Andy Sonnanstine gets the win for TB, which gets homers from Carlos Pena, Willy Aybar, and Evan Longoria. Carl Crawford gets 5 hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple. Kevin Cash connects for Boston. Tampa Bay becomes the first team in ML history to hit at least 3 homers in each of 3 consecutive postseason game.

15thThe Phillies move on to the WS with a 5-1 win over the Dodgers in Game 5 of the NLCS. Cole Hamels gets the victory, while Jimmy Rollins homers for Philadelphia. Manny Ramirez hits a HR in a losing cause for LA. Rollins becomes the 1st player in ML history to leadoff a game with a HR for his team in 3 different postseason games. Ramirez ends the postseason with a .520 BA, a .667 on-base percentage, and a 1.080 SA. Each is the highest by a player in a single postseason, with a minimum of 25 at bats. Dodger SS Rafael Furcal ties a postseason mark with 3 errors in an inning.

16thDown 7-0, the Red Sox stage a miraculous comeback, scoring 4 in the 7th, 3 in the 8th, and the winning run in the 9th to edge the Rays, 8-7, to stay alive in the ALCS. Rookie Justin Masterson gets the win in relief for Boston, which gets homers from David Ortiz and JD Drew. BJ Upton, Carlos Pena, and Evan Longoria homer for TB. The Sox become the second team in ML history to win a postseason game in which they trail by at least 7 runs.

18thThe Red Sox even the ALCS at 3 games apiece with a 4-2 victory over the Rays. Josh Beckett gets the win, aided by homers by Jason Varitek and Kevin Youkilis. BJ Upton and Jason Bartlett homer for TB.

19thThe Jays clinch the AL pennant with a 3-1 win over the Red Sox. Matt Garza gets the winwith help from Willy Aybar, who hits a HR. Justin Pedroia homers for Boston.

22ndThe Phillies edge the Rays, 3-2, to take Game 1 of the WS. Chase Utley hits a 2-run HR for Philadelphia and steals 2 bases. Carl Crawford connects for TB. Cole Hamels gets the win. He becomes the 4th P in history to win Game 1 of the Division Series, Championship Series, and World Series in the same year.

23rdThe Rays even the WS with a 4-2 win over the Phillies in Game 2. James Shields gets the victory, aided by a HR from Eric Bruntlett.  Two of Tampa Bays’ runs come on RBI groundouts, some that has not happened since the 1923 WS. It will happen again in Game 3.

25thCarlos Ruiz’s infield single with the bases loaded brings home the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning as the Phillies top the Rays, 5-4, in Game 3 of the WS. Ruiz also homers for Philadelphia, along with Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. JC Romero gets the win in relief.

26thThe Phillies take a 3-games-to-1 lead in the WS with a 10-2 victory over the Rays. Joe Blanton gets the win for Philadelphia, and helps his own cause with his lone career hit, a HR. He becomes the 1ast player in ML history whose first extra-base hit of his career is a WS HR. Ryan Howard hits a pair of round-trippers for the Phils, while Jayson Werth also connects. Eric Hinske and Carl Crawford homer for Tampa Bay.

27thGame 5 of the WS is suspended due to rain after 5 innings with the score tied at 2-2. It is scheduled to be finished on Tuesday.

28thRain causes the continuation of Game 5 until Wednesday.

29thThe Phillies edge the Rays, 4-3, as Game 5 of the WS is finally completed. The win gives Philadelphia their first Series title since 1980, and just the 2nd in the franchise’s long history. J.C. Romero gets the win in relief for the Phils. Rocco Baldelli homers in a losing cause for TB. Philadelphia P Cole Hamels is named the Series MVP.

Each of the 45 full shares voted by the Phillies players is worth $351,504.48. Tampa Bay Rays awards 43 full shares worth $223,390.05 each. Players on the 2004 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals earned the highest payout ever at $362,173 per share. The players’ postseason pool consists of 60 percent of the gate receipts from the first three games of each Division Series and from the first four games of each League Championship and the World Series. Players from twelve teams received 2008 postseason payouts including all playoff participants as well as the four non-wild-card second place teams.
