1st  The Cardinals shut out the Reds, 13-0, as pitcher Chris Carpenter hits a grand slam and a 2-run double to drive in 6 runs for St. Louis. He becomes only the 3rdstarting pitcher in ML history to earn a win while being credited with more RBIs (6) than innings pitched (5). Catchers Yadier Molina (1) and Jason LaRue (2) add RBIs. Albert Pujols has no assists at 1B, but will end the year with a ML record 185 assists,

The Mariners defeat the Athletics, 4-2. Ichiro Suzuki reaches 220 hits for the season for a ML record 5thtime. The old record of 4 was shared by Jesse Burkett and Rogers Hornsby.

2ndThe Rays trounce the Yankees, 13-4. BJ Upton hits for the cycle and drives in 6 runs for Tampa Bay.

3rd The Marlin edge the Phillies, 4-3, as as Jason Werth (36th) Ryan Howard (45th) homer for Philadelphia. They are the first Phillies duo since Greg Luzinski and Mike Schmidt in 1977 to each hit at least 35 homers in the same season. Howard’s 141 RBIs ties him for the NL lead with Prince Fielder. It was the third time in the last four years that Howard has led the NL in RBIs.   No player since 1900 has led their league in RBIs for four consecutive seasons (as noted by Madison McEntire). Before 1901, no player led his league in RBIs for four consecutive seasons, either, though Cap Anson did it 6 times in 7 years.

At Fenway, the Red Sox outslug the Indians, 11-6, as Josh Beckett wins his 17th. Aaron Laffey gives up 8 runs, including a grand slam to Victor Martinez. Shin-Soo Choo hits his 20thhomer and drives in 3 runs for the Tribe. He joins the 20-20 club with the blow.

4thThe Yankees score 10 runs in the 6thinning and defeat the Rays, 10-2. Alex Rodriguez sets an AL record by driving home 7 runs in the inning on a 3-run HR and a grand slam. The ML record is 8 held by Fernando Tatis. With the two dingers, A-Rod reaches 30 homers for a record-tying 13thseason and his record-tying 12thin a row. Joba Chamberlain hurls an inning in his only relief appearance this year.

The Twins finish the year with a 13-4 drubbing of the visiting Royals. For the second time this year, Jason Kubel drives in 6 runs to pace the Twins.

Nelson Figueroa (3-8) closes out a disappointing Mets season with a 4-hit 4-0 shutout over the Astros. One of the hits is by Miguel Tejada, who finishes the season with a consecutive game hitting streak of 21 games. Josh Thole has 3 hits and Angel Pagan is 4-for-4 for the Mets.

MLB attendance drops for the second straight year, falling 6.7 percent. The 30 teams combined to draw 74.042 million fans, an average of 30,350 (Stats LLC).

5thCardinals P Chris Carpenter wins the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award. He is the first non-rookie in ML history to win 17 or more games in a season after pitching and not winning a game in either of the previous 2 seasons. Blue Jays 2B Aaron Hill wins the award in the AL.

6thThe Twins edge the Tigers, 6-5, in 12 innings in a playoff game to decide the AL West champion. Detroit becomes the first team in ML history to blow a 3-game lead with just 4 games left to play.

7thThe Yankees take the first game of the ALDS with a 7-2 win over the Twins. Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui homer for NY as CC Sabathia gets the win.

The Phillies win the opener of the NLDS, defeating the Rockies, 5-1. Cliff Lee goes all the way for the victory.

The Dodgers beat the Cardinals, 5-3, in the first game of the NLDS. Matt Kemp hits a HR for LA and Jeff Weaver gets the win in relief.

8thThe Rockies edge the Phillies, 5-4, to tie their NLDS at a game apiece. Aaron Cook gets the win while Yorvit Torrealba homers for Colorado. Jayson Werth connects for Philadelphia.

The Angels shut out the Red Sox, 5-0, behind John Lackey to take the opener of their ALDS. Torii Hunter hits a 3-run HR for LA.

The Dodgers jump to a 2-games-to-0 lead over the Cardinals in their NLDS with a 3-2 victory. LA scores 2 runs after Matt Holliday’s error gives them a life with 2 outs in the 9thinning. George Sherrill gets the win in relief. Andre Ethier homers for LA and Holliday connects for St. Louis.

9thMark Teixeira hits a walkoff HR in the bottom of the 11thinning to give the Yankees a 4-3 win over the Twins. Alex Rodriguez’s 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9thsent the game into extra innings. David Robertson gets the win for NY, which goes up, 2-games-to-0, in their ALDS against Minnesota.

The Angels beat the Red Sox, 4-1, to take a 2-0 lead in their ALDS. Jered Weaver gets the win for LA, while Erick Aybar drives home a pair of runs.

10thThe Phillies-Rockies game is postponed due to snow and cold weather.

The Dodgers defeat the Cardinals, 5-1, to sweep their NLDS. Vicente Padilla gets the win for LA and Andre Ethier hits a HR.

11thTrailing 5-1, the Angels bounce back and score 3 runs in the 9thinning to edge the Red Sox, 7-6, and sweep their ALDS. Darren Oliver gets the win in relief and Kendry Morales hits a HR for LA while JD Drew connects for Boston.

The Yankees defeat the Twins, 4-1, to sweep their ALDS. Andy Pettitte gets the win, and Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada homer for NY.

The Phillies take a 2-1 lead in their NLDS with a 6-5 win over the Rockies. Chad Durbin gets the victory in relief and Chase Utley homers for Philadelphia. Carlos Gonzalez hits a HR for Colorado.

12thThe Phillies score 3 runs with 2 outs in the 9thinning to come from behind and defeat the Rockies, 5-4, and move into the NLCS. Ryan Madson gets the win in relief while Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth homer for Philadelphia.

15thThe Phillies score 5 runs in the 5thinning and go on to defeat the Dodgers, 8-6, in the opener of the NLCS. Cole Hamels gets the win as Raul Ibanez and Carlos Ruiz homer for Philadelphia. Manny Ramirez and James Loney connect for LA.

16thThe Dodgers score 2 runs in the bottom of the 8thinning and edge the Phillies, 2-1, to even the NLCS at a game apiece. Hong-Chih Kuo gets the win in relief. A bases loaded walk to Andre Ethier brings home the deciding run.

The Yankees take the opener of the ALCS with a 4-1 victory over the Angels. CC Sabathia gets the win for NY, while Hideki Matsui drives in a pair of runs.

17thThe Yankees score a run on Maicer Izturis’ error in the 13thinning to beat the Angels, 4-3, in Game 2 of the ALCS. Alex Rodriguez’s HR in the bottom of the 11thinning ties the score after LA scored a run in the top half of the frame. Derek Jeter also homers for NY. David Robertson gets the win in relief.

18thThe Phillies score 4 runs in the 1stinning and go on to shut out the Dodgers, 11-0, behind Cliff Lee in Game 3 of the NLCS. Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth homer for Philadelphia.

19thJeff Mathis hits a 2-outs double in the bottom of the 11thinning to give the Angels a 5-4 win over the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALCS. Ervin Santana gets the win in relief for LA, as Pedro Guerrero and Howie Kendrick homer. Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Johnny Damon and Jorge Posada account for NY’s runs with solo HRs.

Jimmy Rollins hits a 2-outs, 2-run double in the bottom of the 9thinning to give the Phillies a come-from-behind 5-4 victory in Game 4 of the NLCS. Philadelphia leads the series, 3-games-to-1. Brad Lidge gets the win in relief. Ryan Howard homers for Philadelphia and Matt Kemp connects for LA.

20thThe Yankees clobber the Angels, 10-1, behind CC Sabathia. Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon homer for NY. Kendry Morales accounts for LA’s only score with a solo HR.

21stThe Phillies crush the Dodgers, 10-4, to win the NLCS and move on to the World Series. Chad Durbin gets the win for Philly. The two teams set a postseason record by hitting 7 HRs. Jayson Werth (2), Pedro Feliz and Shane Victorino connect for the Phils, and Orlando Hudson, Andre Ethier and James Loney for LA. Ryan Howard is named NLCS MVP.

22ndThe Angels edge the Yankees, 7-6, to keep their hopes alive in the ALCS. NY leads the series, 3-games-to-2. Kevin Jepsen gets the win in relief for LA. The Yankees score all 6 of their runs in the 7thinning, to erase the Angels’ 4-0 lead. LA bounces back with 3 runs in their half of the inning. Torii Hunter, Pedro Guerrero and Kendry Morales each bring home a pair of runs for the Angels.

25thThe Yankees defeat the Angels, 5-2, to win the ALCS and move on to the World Series. Andy Pettitte gets his record 16thpostseason victory. Johnny Damon brings home a pair of runs for NY. CC Sabathia is named MVP for the ALCS.

26thThe Indians hire a new manager, Manny Acta who was fired in mid-season by the Nationals.  The Tribe had also talked to Bobby Valentine, but made their offer after the Astros expressed interest in hiring Acta as manager.

The Padres hire Jed Hoyer as GM.

27thThe Astros hire Red Sox bench coach Brad Mills as their new manager.

28thCliff Lee hurls a 6-hit complete game victory over the Yankees, defeating the New Yorkers, 6-1, in the opener of the WS. Chase Utley hits a pair of HRs off CC Sabathia for Philadelphia. He becomes just the 2ndlefthanded batter in WS history to hit a pair of homers off a lefthanded pitcher. Babe Ruth accomplished the feat in 1928, connecting twice against Bill Sherdel.

29thThe Yankees defeat the Phillies, 3-1, to even the Series at 1 game apiece. AJ Burnett gets the win as Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui homer for NY.

Derek Jeter wins the 2009 Roberto Clemente Award, given annually to a player who combines community service with excellence on the field.

31stThe Yankees take Game 3 of the WS with an 8-5 win over the Phillies. Andy Pettitte gets the win, and Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui, and Nick Swisher homer for NY. Jayson Werth hits a pair of homers for Philadelphia and Carlos Ruiz also connects.
