1stThe Pirates defeat the Reds, 6-2, in the NL wild-card game to move on to the NL division series against the Cardinals. Francisco Liriano gets the win for Pittsburgh with the help of a pair of homers by Russell Martin and another blast by Marlon Byrd. Shin-Soo Choo connects for Cincinnati. Martin is the first catcher to hit postseason homers for three different teams.

2ndThe Rays shut out the Indians, 4-0, behind Alex Cobb in the AL wild-card game to advance to the AL division series against the Red Sox. Delmon Young homers to lead Tampa.

3rdThe Cardinals take the opening game of their Division Series against the Pirates, winning, 9-1. Adam Wainwright gets the victory for St. Louis with the help of a 3-run HR by Carlos Beltran. It is Beltran’s 15thhomer in 129 at bats in post-season play, exactly the same numbers that Babe Ruth had.

Clayton Kershaw pitches the Dodgers to a 6-1 win over the Braves in the opener of their Division series. Adrian Gonzalez homers for LA. Chipper Jones throws out the first pitch, but gets miffed at the Braves when they pick the mascot to catch him. The Braves were not pleased when Chipper was interviewed on the radio and picked the Dodgers to win in 4.  He is right.  Chipper will skip spring training in 2014.

4thThe Red Sox pound out a 12-2 win over the Rays in the opener of their AL Division Series. Jon Lester gets the win for Boston, while Ben Zobrist and Sean Rodriguez homer for Tampa Bay.

The Tigers squeak by the Athletics, 3-2, to take the opening game of their AL Division Series. Max Scherzer gets the win for Detroit. Yoenis Cespedes’ 2-run homer accounts for both Oakland runs.

The Pirates even their NL Division Series with the Cardinals with a 7-1 victory. Rookie Gerrit Cole gets the win for Pittsburgh, aided by HRs from Starling Marte and Pedro Alvarez. Yadier Molina connects for St. Louis.

The Braves edge the Dodgers, 4-3, to even their NL Division Series. Mike Minor gets the win for Atlanta, while Hanley Ramirez homers for LA.

The Reds fire manager Dusty Baker.

5thThe Red Sox take a 2-games-to-0 lead over the Rays in their Division Series with a 7-4 victory. David Ortiz hits a pair of homers for Boston as John Lackey gets the win.

The A’s even their Division Series with the Tigers, defeating Detroit by a score of 1-0. Rookie Sonny Gray hurls 8 scoreless innings for Oakland, with Grant Balfour getting the win in relief. Stephen Vogt’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 9thinning pushes across the only run of the game.

6thThe Pirates defeat the Cardinals, 5-3, to take a 2-games-to-1 lead in their Division Series. Mark Melancon gets the win in relief as Pedro Alvarez drives in the lead run in the bottom of the 8thinning. Carlos Beltran homers for St. Louis.

The Dodgers crush the Braves, 13-6, to take the lead in their Division Series. Chris Capuano gets the win in relief, as LA gets roundtrippers from Carl Crawford and Jose Uribe. Jason Heyward connects for Atlanta.

7thCardinals’ rookie pitcher Michael Wacha takes a no-hitter into the 8thinning before surrendering a homer to Pedro Alvarez. It is Pittsburgh’s only hit as St. Louis takes a 2-1 decision to even their Division Series at 2 games apiece. Matt Holliday homers for St. Louis and Wacha gets the win.

Jose Laboton’s walkoff homer in the bottom of the 9thgives the Rays a 5-4 win over the Red Sox. Fernando Rodney gets the win in relief as Evan Longoria also homers for Tampa Bay.

Juan Uribe’s 2-run homer in the 8thinning gives the Dodgers the go-ahead run and they hold on to defeat the Braves, 4-3, to take their Division Series 3-games-to-1. Carl Crawford hits a pair of homers for LA and Brian Wilson gets the win in relief.

Oakland gets homers from Brandon Moss, Seth Smith and Jose Reddick as the Athletics defeat the Tigers, 6-3. Jarrod Parker gets the win as Oakland takes a 2-games-to-1 lead over the Tigers in their Division Series.

9thThe Red Sox edge the Rays, 3-1, to win their Division Series and move on to the ALCS. Craig Breslow gets the win in relief as Shane Victorino’s 7th-inning infield single brings in the winning run.

The Tigers defeat the Athletics, 8-6, to tie their Division Series as 2 games apiece. Max Scherzer gets the win in relief, helped along by homers from Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta. Jed Lowrie homers for Oakland.

9thThe Cardinals defeat the Pirates, 6-1, behind Adam Wainwright, to win their Division Series and move on to the NLCS against the Dodgers. Matt Adams and David Freese hit homers for St. Louis.

10thThe Tigers defeat the Athletics, 3-0, behind Justin Verlander to win their Division Series and move on to the ALCS. Miguel Cabrera homers for Detroit.

11thThe Cardinals take the first game of the NLCS with a 3-2 win in 13 innings. Lance Lynn gets the win in relief for St. Louis. Carlos Beltran drives in all 3 of the Cardinals’ runs and also throws out a runner at the plate in the 10thinning.

12thThe Cardinals shut out the Dodgers, 1-0, behind Michael Wacha, to take a 2-games-to-0 lead in the NLCS. John Jay’s sac fly brings in the only run of the game for the Cardinals who manage only 2 hits.

The Tigers edge the Red Sox, 1-0, as 5 pitchers combine on a 1-hitter. Anibal Sanchez gets the win after hurling 6 hitless innings. He strikes out 4 batters in the 1stinning, becoming the second pitcher to accomplish the feat in postseason history. Orval Overall did so for the Cubs in the 1908 WS. Jhonny Peralta drives in the game’s only run for Boston. Daniel Nava’s 1-out single in the 9thinning is the Red Sox only hit.

13th   The Red Sox bounce back from a 5-0 deficit to edge the Tigers, 6-5, and tie the ALCS at 1 game apiece. David Ortiz, who will go 2-for-22 in the series, hits an 8thinning grand slam to tie the score as four pitchers are each charged with a run apiece. Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s walkoff single an inning later wins it. Koji Uehara gets the win in relief for Boston. Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila homer in a losing cause for Detroit.

14thThe Dodgers defeat the Cardinals, 3-0, to move within a game of St. Louis in the NLCS. Hyun-Jn Ryu gets the win, hurling 7 innings of shutout ball. Yasiel Puig’s triple sparks the Dodgers.

15th   The Red Sox shut out the Tigers, 1-0, behind John Lackey. Mike Napoli’s 7th-inning HR accounts for the game’s only run. Boston leads the ALCS, 2-games-to-1.

The Cardinals take a commanding 3-games-to-1 lead over the Dodgers in the NLCS with a 4-2 victory. Matt Holliday hits a 2-run homer for St. Louis and Shane Robinson adds a solo blast. Lance Lynn gets the win for the Cardinals.

16th   The Tigers ride a 5-run 2ndinning to a 7-3 win over the Red Sox to tie the ALCS at 2 games apiece. Doug Fister gets the win for Detroit, as Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson each drive in a pair of runs.

The Dodgers clout 4 HRs and go on to defeat the Cardinals, 6-4, in the NLCS, cutting St. Louis’ lead to 3-games-to-2. Adrian Gonzalez hits a pair of homers and Carl Crawford and A.J. Ellis each adds a solo blast to back up the hurling of Zach Greinke.

17thThe Red Sox edge the Tigers, 4-3, to take a 3-games-to-2 lead in the ALCS. Mike Napoli hits a single, double and homer to lead Boston as Jon Lester gets the win.

18thRookie pitcher Michael Wacha hurls 7 shutout innings and leads the Cardinals to a series-clinching 9-0 win over the Dodgers in the NLCS. Wacha becomes the first rookie in history to record a pair of scoreless starts in a single postseason series. He is named Series MVP.

19thShane Victorino’s 7thinning grand slam leads the Red Sox to a 5-2 win over the Tigers, and clinches the ALCS for Boston. Junichi Tazawa gets the win in relief, with Series MVP Koji Uehara getting his 3rdsave.

21stAfter eight seasons at the helm, Jim Leyland announces his retirement as Tigers manager.  Three times during Leyland’s rein, the Tigers won the AL eastern division.

In Boston, Alex Rodriguez’s attorney Joseph Tacopina tells CNN that his client has “absolutely not” taken illegal PEDs recently and challenges the notion that MLB possesses any evidence to the contrary. Rodriguez made the statement in January when the Miami New Timesfirst reported a connection between him and Biogenesis, the shuttered South Florida anti-aging clinic.  A-Rod has declined to comment since August 5th, when MLB suspended him for 211 games.  Tacopina also admits to CNN that the Yankee third sacker paid $305,000 for evidence concerning his appeal hearing, with the money allegedly going to efforts to discredit MLB investigators. Tacopina said that $105,000 was paid for “actual documentation” from two witnesses and depositing $200,000 for a videotape that hasn’t yet been received.

22ndMets young ace Matt Harvey undergoes surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow: Tommy John surgery. He is expected to miss the 2014 season.  Harvey finished the year at 9-5 in 27 starts and a 2.27 ERA. Dummy Taylor (1902) and George “Farmer” Bell (1907) are the only other pitchers with 25 starts, an ERA under 2.30 and 9 wins or fewer.

23rd   Mike Napoli his a 3-run double in the 1stinning and the Red Sox go on to trounce the Cardinals in the opener of the WS by a score of 8-1. Jon Lester gets the win for Boston and David Ortiz homers. Matt Holliday connects for St. Louis.

24th   Michael Wacha paces the Cardinals to a 4-2 win over the Red Sox to tie the Series at 1 game apiece. David Ortiz homers for Boston.

26thThe Cardinals score the winning run in the bottom of the 9thon a controversial obstruction call at third base, edging the Red Sox by a 5-4 score to take a 2-games-to-1 lead in the Series. Matt Holliday drives in 3 runs for St. Louis and Trevor Rosenthal gets the win in relief.

27th   The Red Sox bounce back to even the Series as Jonny Gomes hits a 3-run HR to lead Boston to a 4-2 victory. Felix Doubront gets the win in relief. The game ends on an obstruction call, a first in the WS.

28thThe Red Sox defeat the Cardinals, 3-1, to take a 3-games-to-2 lead in the World Series. Jon Lester gets the win for Boston and Matt Holliday homers for St. Louis.

29thThe White Sox announce the signing of slugger Jose Abreu, who defected from Cuba in August. The deal is a 6-year $68 million contract.  In 2010/2011, Abreu hit .453/.597/.986 with 93 RBI and 33 homers in just 66 games. He missed 23 games because of bursitis in his should but still broke the homerun record.

     MLB Gold Glove winners are announced, with Yadier Molina winning his 6thstraight award. Colorado third sacker Nelson Arenado becomes just the 10throokie to earn the honor and the first rookie third baseman since Frank Malzone in 1957. The Orioles and Royals have the most winners with 3 apiece. There are 8 first-time recipients.

30thThe Red Sox defeat the Cardinals, 6-2, to win their 3rdWS championship in 10 years. John Lackey gets the victory, Shane Victorino drives in 4 runs, and Stephen Drew homers for Boston.  David Ortiz is named Series MVP.

31stThe Nationals name Matt Williams as their new manager. The former slugger has not managed before.
