9thThe Chicago Cubs hire Andy MacPhail as president/CEO.  He had been GM of the Twins where he won two World Championships (1987, 1991). To compensate the Twins, the Cubs send Class A pitcher Hector Trinidad to Minnesota.

12thAt Harrisburg, Bill Pulsipher of Binghamton (Eastern League) fires a 2-0 playoff no-hitter against Harrisburg. Binghamton evens the series at a game apiece and will win the series, 3 to 1.

14th The remainder of the baseball season is canceled by acting commissioner Bud Selig after 34 days of the players’ strike. There will be no World Series for the first time since 1904.

15th The Mets are informed that P Dwight Gooden is in violation of his aftercare program for substance abuse.

26th The Baltimore Orioles fire manager Johnny Oates.
