Padres LF Milton Bradley is an offensive force, hitting a 3rdinning homerun, lingering at the plate in the 5thafter being called out on strikes, and then, avoiding a collision, stepping on the thumb of teammate Mike Cameron in the 7thwho slid in an attempt to stop a line drive. Cameron will only be able to play one more game. The play occurs on Garrett Atkins inside-the-park homer. Not through yet, Bradley tears the ACL in his left knee an inning later when he is restrained by manager Bud Black, who tries to prevent Bradley from continuing an argument with ump Mike Winters after he is ejected. Winters will be suspended for 5 games for baiting the fiery Bradley, incurring the suspension because plate ump Runge asked Bradley if he had deliberately thrown a bat at Winters. Bradley singles and continues his chat with Winters at first base.

Highly touted rookie Lance Broadway (1-1) makes his debut as a starter for the White Sox and receives rave reviews, shutting out Kansas City for six innings. Paul Konerko hits a three-run homer in the 1st off another rookie, Billy Buckner, as the Sox roll to a 10-0 win. Broadway will notch one more win before his time in the Show closes.
The Cardinals shut out the Mets, 3-0. New York has lost 10 of their last 14 games to fall into a tie for first with the Phillies after being ahead by 7 games with just 17 to go. Moises Alou fails to get a hit, ending his club-record 30-game hitting streak. It is the longest streak of the year, and the longest ever for a player 40 years of age.

The Diamondbacks trim the Rockies, 4-2, to clinch their 1st playoff berth since 2002. The win ends Colorado’s winning streak at 11 games—best in the ML this year.
The Mariners edge the Rangers, 6-4. Ichiro Suzuki gets 2 singles to give him 200 for the year. It is only the 2ndtime since 1900 a player had had 200 singles in a season. Suzuki did so in 2004 when he had a ML-record 225 for the year.
29thThe Mets trounce the Marlins, 13-1, to move back into a tie for 1stplace. John Maine takes a no-hitter into the 8thinning, finally giving up an infield single to Florida C Paul Hoover, Hoover entered the game when starting C Miguel Olivo was ejected in the 5thinning for throwing a punch at Mets SS Jose Reyes. Rookies Willie Collazo and Carlos Muniz complete the 1-hitter for New York. Maine strikes out 14 batters.
The White Sox edge the Tigers, 3-2, when they score a run in the 9thon Juan Uribe’s RBI-single. A walk and a disputed sac bunt set the stage. The throw to 2B by catcher Ivan Rodriguez was high and the ump’s ruling that the second baseman lost contact with the bag prompted an argument from Tiger manager Jim Leyland. Leyland is thumbed. Curtis Granderson hit his last extra base hit of the season, a double. Granderson ends with 23 homers, 23 triples, 38 doubles, and 26 stolen bases. He’s just the 6thplayer in history to reach 20 doubles, triples and homers in the same season and only the third (Wildfire Schulte and Willie Mays) to top 20 steals as well.
Troy Tulowitzki belts a 5thinning grand slam as the red-hit Rockies roll over the Diamondbacks, 11-1 at Coors Field. Matt Holliday hits his 50thdouble and drives in 2 runs, and late-season call-up Seth Smith has another pinch hit to go 4-for-7 in that role. He’ll add another in the October 1 playoff and three more in the post-season.
The Cubs one-hit the Reds, winning by a score of 4-0. Rich Hill goes 6 innings for the win, surrendering only Buck Cots’ 2-out double in the 6th.
30thThe Phillies beat the Nationals, 6-1 to clinch the NL East crown. Ryan Howard has three hits, including homer #47. He strikes out just once to end the year with 199 K’s, anew ML record. Jimmy Rollins has 2 hits, including his 20thtriple of the year. Jamie Moyer evens his record at 12-12. Philadelphia rallied from 7 games down on September 12, matching the biggest September comeback in ML history.
The Cardinals edge the Pirates, 6-5. Skip Schumaker goes 5-for-5 for St. Louis, including a double. The Cardinals use a ML-record-tying 10 pitchers in the game, the second time this month that 10 hurlers have appeared in a regulation game. The combined total of 18 pitchers used by both teams is a new record.
With the season on the line, Tom Glavine does not make it out of the first inning, giving up seven runs on five hits, two walks and a bases-loaded hit batsman. The veteran is lifted after recording one out as the Mets cap a disastrous September with a 7-1 loss to the Marlins. Marlins starter Dontrell Willis hits a triple, hits Carlos Beltran’s thumb (breaking it) and walks three in the 3rdinning to prompt being relieved.
The Rockies defeat the Diamondbacks, 4-3, to finish in a tie for the wild-card spot with the Padres. Colorado finishes the regular season by winning 14 out of 15 games.
It was bound to happen, but three teams this season—Texas, Washington, and Florida—all became the first team to go through a season without having a pitcher throw a complete game.
